Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has finalised preparation of documents to float international tenders for procuring essential equipments to expedite cargo handling activities.
CPA will float the tenders soon, and purchase 10 gantry cranes in two phases – six cranes in the first phase and four others in the second phase.
Officials concerned said a seven-member committee was constituted to prepare the tender documents with the CPA member (engineering) as its head.
“The documents have been prepared, and the tenders will be floated in two phases for procuring 10 quay gantry cranes,” a member of the committee said.
Chittagong Port users said there is no alternative to enhancing the port’s handling capacity, as the import and export of containerised cargo through the port has increased considerably in 2016 compared to the previous year. The port handled 2.346 million TEUs (twenty foot equivalent unit) of containers in 2016, whereas the volume was 2.024 million TEUs in 2015.
The users have been demanding enhancement of cargo-handling equipments for the container-carrying ships since early last year when they perceived that the capacity of New Mooring Container Terminal (NMCT) with five berths could not be exploited fully.
Leaders of Port Users Forum said import-export activities in the port are being hampered due to shortage of equipments, especially quay gantry cranes, used for unloading containers from ships.
The mega project that was taken in October 2015 for upgrading the port could not provide the expected outcome due to shortage of gantry cranes. Most of the port’s existing cranes are old, and need to be replaced, they further said.
CPA member (admin and planning) Zafar Alam said the handling equipment shortage problem would be solved by the current fiscal year, as most of the required equipments would be brought within the period.
